Ocean Yachts
40 Super Sport
1977–81
The Ocean 40 Super Sport was the first full-production boat ever built by Ocean Yachts. Introduced to enthusiastic reviews in 1977, the 40 SS was a breakthrough design capable of reaching a top speed of 30 knots—unheard-of performance in the late 1970s for a production boat this size. While not unusually spacious, the cockpit is adequate for serious fishing activities and came with a teak sole and teak covering boards. Delivered with a long list of standard equipment (generator, air conditioning, cockpit freezer, etc.), the Ocean 40 was available with a two-stateroom, galley-down floorplan or a two-stateroom, galley-up layout with a day berth in the companionway. The interior—considered very upscale in her day—is a blend of varnished teak woodwork and vinyl wall coverings, and large cabin windows allow for plenty of natural lighting. Topside, the flybridge will seat six with bench seating forward of the helm. A good-running boat with standard 410hp 6-71 Detroit diesels, she’ll cruise around 25 knots and reach a top speed of 28–29 knots. Stretched to 42 feet in 1980, the Ocean 40 SS marked the beginning of a long series of Ocean sportfishing designs.
