Magnum
53 Sport
1978–96
Introduced in 1978, the Magnum 53 Sport’s sleek Mediterranean styling, exciting performance, and lavish accommodations set the standards for big express yachts long before they became popular in the American market. The 53 Sport is built on a rugged deep-V hull of solid fiberglass or—optionally—lighter, more expensive, Kevlar-reinforced construction. Because she was a semi-production yacht, the Magnum 53 could be highly personalized and each is a little different. A variety of floorplans were available over the years, most with two staterooms, and nearly all were delivered with posh Euro-style furnishings. Thanks to her relatively broad beam, the cockpit of the Magnum 53 is huge with room for a massive sun pad as well as such amenities as a wet bar, lounge seating, and a radar arch. The entire aft section of the cockpit lifts for excellent access to the engine room. Among many engine options, a pair of 1,080hp 12V92 Detroits matched with Arneson surface drives cruise the Magnum 53 Sport at 35–38 knots (40+ knots top), and twin 1,200 Cats cruise at 37–40 knots and reach about 45 knots wide open. About 50 were built, mostly for European buyers.
