Kha Shing
40 Sundeck
1980–88
One of the most popular Taiwan imports during the 1980s, the Kha Shing 40 Sundeck is probably better known as the Spindrift 40 on the West Coast and the Vista or Southern Star 40 on the East Coast. She’s built on a semi-displacement hull with a solid fiberglass bottom, shallow keel, and a moderate 14-foot beam. Over 120 of these boats were sold into the U.S. market over the years, and most were delivered with a spacious two-stateroom, galley-down layout with a lower helm in the salon. The interior is all teak, and the handcrafted woodwork is as good as it gets in an Asian import of her era. With her wraparound cabin windows and excellent headroom, the salon of the Kha Shing 40 Sundeck is spacious and airy in spite of all the dark woodwork. Notable features include port and starboard salon doors, wide side decks, a large stall shower in the aft head compartment, teak handrails and a full-width master stateroom whose dimensions are impressive for a 40-footer. Many, if not most, were powered with twin 165hp or 200hp Volvo diesels. Cruising speeds range from 10–11 knots, and the top speed is around 15 knots.
