Chaparral

278 XLC; Signature 27

1984–91

Chaparral 278 XLC; Signature 27
A popular model, the 278 XLC (called the Signature 27 in 1989–92) was for a time the largest boat in the Chaparral fleet. Like most trailerable cruisers in this size range, the 278 XLC is a midcabin design although her narrow 8-foot, 2-inch beam results in a more compact interior than other trailerable models with a full 8-foot, 6-inch beam. The floorplan provides berths for six and includes double berths fore and aft, a convertible dinette, a small galley and a standup head compartment with shower. The 278’s dark teak interior remained unchanged until 1988 when a new designer mojpg with lighter fabrics and Formica cabinetry was introduced. The cockpit—also updated in 1988—will seat six to eight people and came with a bench seat at the transom. A hatch in the sole provides easy engine access, and the side decks—while narrow—are at least wide enough for bow access. Additional features include some colorful hull graphics, a teak bow pulpit and swim platform, and teak handrails on the foredeck. Among several engine options, a single 330hp MerCruiser sterndrive will cruise in the low 20s and reach a top speed of 30+ knots.
