50 Cockpit Trawler
1981–84
Originally built by Marshall Marine in California, Wellcraft took over production of the Californian 50 Cockpit Trawler in 1983 when they acquired the Californian molds from Marshall. With a modest 14'2" beam, the Californian a narrow boat for her length and the interior dimensions are somewhat compact. Her profile is that of a traditional trawler, but her bottom is a semi-displacement design with a shallow, full length keel. The Californian 50 was offered with a galley-down layout (standard) or with the galley up on the salon level. Note the full size tub in the master head. While the salon in either floorplan is indeed narrow (the side decks are wide on this boat), the large 360-degree cabin windows allow for plenty of outside natural lighting. Rich mahogany woodwork is applied throughout the boat’s interior. The engine room is huge with good access to the motors. Outside, the afterdeck is very large with plenty of entertaining space. Standard engines for the Californian 50 were 300hp Cats. She’ll cruise efficiently at 13 knots and reach about 16 knots wide open. GM 6V92s were optional.
