Zeelander's about page traces the brand to 2002, when entrepreneur and yachtsman Sietse Koopmans founded Zeelander in the Netherlands. The company has remained family-owned and operates as a made-to-order builder, constructing each yacht individually to the buyer's specification rather than holding production inventory. Since 2017, all Zeelander production has been concentrated at a single facility in Groot Ammers, South Holland — a riverside location between Rotterdam and Utrecht on the River Lek.

Zeelander's model range illustrates the builder's signature design language: continuous curved surfaces carried across the hull and superstructure in place of the hard chines and angular lines common in production motor yachts. Each Zeelander requires on the order of 16,000 to 25,000 build hours to complete. The lineup has grown from the original Z44 through the Z55 and Z72 to the current Zeelander 5, 6, 7, and 8 models, spanning roughly 44 to 72 feet.
