Trumpy is an American custom boatbuilder that produced more than 400 wooden mahogany motor yachts from the late 1930s through 1973, with yards first in Camden and Gloucester City, New Jersey and later in Annapolis, Maryland after a 1947 relocation. The marque was established by Norwegian-born naval architect John Trumpy Sr., who emigrated to the United States in 1908 and grew the operation from the existing Mathis Yacht Building Company, renaming it John Trumpy & Sons in 1943. Yachting Magazine's Trumpy retrospective details the distinguishing construction features — mahogany planking, signature bow scrollwork, and the craftsmanship that defined the yard's output across its production era.
Trumpy's most celebrated commission was the 104-foot Sequoia, which entered U.S. presidential service under President Hoover beginning in 1933 and remained associated with the presidential fleet for decades. Power & Motoryacht's account of the presidential yacht history situates the Sequoia within Trumpy's standing among the most discerning American yacht owners of the era. Buyers evaluating Trumpy yachts today are acquiring wooden collector vessels from a closed yard; wooden hull surveys covering fastening condition, framing integrity, planking condition, and mechanical updates are the critical inspection areas in this category.
