Custom Carolina is not one manufacturer. It is the family of one-off sportfishing boats built by North Carolina shops, and HMY Yachts lists them by the builder's name, such as Blackwell, Irving Forbes, Ricky Gillikin, Harrison Boatworks, and Joey Miller. Marlin's survey of the Carolina builders traces the style to post-war charter captains including Warren O'Neal, Buddy Davis, Omie Tillett, Sunny Briggs, Ricky Scarborough Sr., and Buddy Cannady, and profiles the shops building today: Spencer Yachts, Winter Custom Yachts, Scarborough Boatworks, Bayliss Boatworks, and Jarrett Bay Boatworks.

The look is the tell: a deep bow flare and a broken sheerline that drops toward the bow, with each shop putting its own signature on where the break falls and how the window lines taper. Under the paint, the classic Carolina hull is cold-molded.
