Cobalt Boats was founded in 1968 by Pack St. Clair in Neodesha, Kansas, where the company continues to manufacture its boats. Cobalt built its reputation on hand-laid fiberglass construction and finish quality, a standard carried through decades of producing sterndrive and outboard runabouts, bowriders, and larger day boats and cruisers.

Malibu Boats acquired Cobalt in 2017, and Cobalt continues to operate as a Malibu Boats brand while keeping its Neodesha manufacturing base. Boating Magazine's test of the 2021 Cobalt R8 Surf confirms both the Malibu Boats ownership and the Kansas build location. HMY Yacht Sales' pre-owned Cobalt inventory spans sport boats and day boats from 28 to 35 feet, covering model years 2013 through 2025.
