Wellcraft 310 Suncruiser; 3100 Express
The Wellcraft 3100 Express (called the 310 Suncruiser in 1979–82) is a typical 1980s-style express whose roomy accommodations, low price, and dependable inboard power made her a popular model for Wellcraft. Built on a solid fiberglass, deep-V hull, the large cockpit and spacious interior of the 3100 are made possible by her generous 11-foot, 6-inch beam. Although she lacks the midcabin berth found in most express cruisers, there are berths for six below when the dinette is converted and the settee’s hinged backrest is lifted to create twin pipe berths. Both the galley and dinette are on the small side, and a privacy curtain separates the stateroom from the main cabin. The 3100’s uncomplicated decor is plain compared with today’s high-glitz interiors, and the finish leaves a lot to be desired. Topside, double helm and companion seats are forward in the cockpit and a bench seat is provided at the transom. Removable hatches in the cockpit sole access the engines and V-drives, which, incidentally, are very close together due to the outboard fuel tanks. Twin 260hp inboard gas engines cruise the 3100 Express at 18–19 knots and reach a top speed in the mid-to-high 20s.
