Wellcraft
30 Scarab Sport
1979–93
A popular boat for many years and one of the first high-performance center console designs, the 30 Scarab Sport evolved from Wellcraft’s very successful offshore racing program of the early 1970s. She combined the speed and rough-water handling characteristics of her original raceboat hull with the working platform of a center console fisherman in what was—and still is for many—a very exciting package. Built on a solid fiberglass hull, her narrow 8-foot beam results in a relatively small cockpit compared with traditional 30-foot center consoles, and fishing space aft of the console is at a premium. (The narrow beam has another notable downside: poor low-speed stability.) The basic configuration of the boat changed little over the years (early models had a lot of teak trim, etc.), and standard fishing features included under-gunnel rod racks, dry storage, in-deck fish box, livewell, and rod holders. A Porta-Potti can be installed between the V-berths in the small cabin. A superb rough-water performer with a dry and comfortable ride, twin 200hp outboards will deliver a top speed of close to 50 knots and an economical cruising speed of over 30 knots.
