Wellcraft
2800 Martinique
2001–02
Introduced in 2001, the Wellcraft 2800 Martinique (note that a previous 2800 Martinique model ran from 1997–99) is a generic mid-cabin cruiser for entry-level buyers with an eye on price. The Martinique had more going for her than simply price, however—her sporty styling was a cut above the norm, and a wide 9'6" beam gave the 2800 more cockpit and cabin space than many 28-footers. Construction is solid fiberglass, and a deep-V hull provides a comfortable ride when the seas pick up. Below deck, the Martinique’s open salon has a starboard galley featuring cherry cabinets, fridge, microwave, and a single-burner electric cook top. Opposite the galley is a U-shaped convertible dinette. The forward seating area converts to a roomy V-berth with privacy curtain. Aft, the mid-cabin area provides an additional double berth. The enclosed head includes a shower. In the cockpit, the U-shaped aft seating converts into a sun pad. A walk-through windshield provides access to the bow. The entry light switch at the transom door is a thoughtful touch. An electric hatch provides easy access to the engine compartment. Among several engine options, twin 210hp Volvo I/Os cruise in the mid 20s (about 40 knots top).
