Sea Ray Yachts
280 Sun Sport
1996–2001
Introduced in 1996, the popularity of the Sea Ray 280 Sun Sport derives from her ability to do several things well. A functional cabin makes the 280 a good overnighter, and her generous 9'6" beam provides the cockpit space required to accommodate several guests in comfort. The 280’s big cockpit still leaves enough space below for an expansive U-shaped dinette (with a removable table) as well as an enclosed head with VacuFlush toilet and pullout shower. A wet bar with cooler, glass rack, and trash receptacle is just behind the helm seat, and an electrically operated engine hatch under the U-shaped aft seat lifts to reveal a well-finished engine compartment. The sporty helm console is a plus, and the flip-up bolster seat is essential in any high-speed sportboat. An extended swim platform and transom shower were standard and a radar arch was a popular option. Among several sterndrive power choices offered with the 280 Bowrider, twin 260hp (or 270hp) MerCruisers deliver a top speed of 45–50 knots, while a single 310 MerCruiser I/O will reach the mid 30s top.
