Dawson
38 Convertible
1987–92
The Dawson 38 was a limited production fisherman designed to appeal to the tournament level angler. The hull was not a new—it was first developed back in 1975 in Pensacola where it was used for commercial and charter service. The hulls were purchased and shipped to New Jersey where the Dawson 38 was finished out at the old Pacemaker yard. With a steep 24 degrees of deadrise aft, the Dawson has more “V” than just about any other boat of her size on the market. Below, solid teak cabinets, brass hinges, rounded corners, and functional fabrics highlight the interior. Her two-stateroom, galley-up floorplan includes a centerline double bed forward, over/under berths in the guest cabin, a large head with separate shower enclosure, and a built-in wet bar in the salon. The Dawson’s cockpit isn’t large for a 38-foot boat but it is uncluttered and includes a lift-out fish box. Standard 375hp Cats cruise around 25 knots (30 knots top), and optional 485hp 6-71s cruise at a fast 30 knots (33–34 knots wide open). A total of 26 were built during her production years. Note that an express model built on this same hull was also produced.
