An updated version of the popular Chris Craft 42 Tournament Fisherman (1975–77) the durable 422 Commander has stood the test of time with offshore anglers and family cruisers alike. There’s much to like about this boat in spite of her age. Styling was leading edge for her era, and the Commander’s versatile two-stateroom interior features a roomy owner’s suite with island berth (and vanity sink), a large double-entry head with full-size shower, and a convenient breakfast bar in the salon overlooking a U-shaped galley with copious counter and storage space. A lower helm was optional for boaters in cooler climates, and removable hatches in the salon sole provide good access to the engines. The 422’s roomy fishing cockpit, complete with two in-deck fish boxes, transom door, coaming pads, and washdowns ranks among the biggest in her class. (Teak cover boards were a popular option.) Topside, two captain’s chairs and an L-shaped bench on the large flybridge provide seating for a small crowd. Built on a solid fiberglass hull with wide 14-foot beam, the 422 Commander is known for a comfortable ride. She’ll cruise at 22 knots with standard 450hp GM 6-71TI diesels (26–28 knots top).
