42 Tournament Fisherman

Chris Craft’s second 42-foot convertible model (the original 42 Commander SF, built in 1968–72, has a 13-foot beam), the 42 Tournament Fisherman combined bold styling with the spirited performance made available by the then new 425hp GM 8V71TI diesel engines. Designed to compete with the Bertram 42 Convertible (1976–87) and Hatteras 42 Convertible (1971–78), just over 40 Tournament Fishermen were sold making her a moderately successful model by the standards of her day. Heavily built on a solid fiberglass hull, the two-stateroom, two-head interior of the 42 Tournament—with its copious teak trim, deep pile carpeting, and large, wraparound salon windows—took 1970s convertible luxury to the next level. A serving counter in the salon overlooks the U-shaped galley below, and a lower helm was optional for cold-weather boaters. Three removable hatches in the salon sole provide very good access to the engines. Cockpit amenities include an in-deck fish box and livewell, sink with tackle center, and an optional transom door and freezer. A fine headsea boat, she’ll cruise at 16–17 knots with standard 320hp GM 8V71N diesels. Optional 425hp 8V71TIs cruise at 23–24 knots (high 20s top).
