Blue Seas
31
1988–91
The Blue Seas 31 was one of the last designs introduced by Hinterhoeller Yachts, the Canadian builder best known for their high-quality series of Nonsuch sailboats. The original builder, the Blue Seas Boat Co. of Clinton, Ontario, introduced the Blue Seas 31 at the 1988 Toronto boat show. Production under the Hinterhoeller brand commenced in late 1989 and continued until the company closed in 1991. A lobster-boat design with a Downeast heritage, the Blue Seas was built on a single-piece hull with three watertight compartments, a nearly plumb bow, rounded bilges, and a full-length keel. Inside, a privacy door separates the salon from the lower level galley and stateroom—very unusual. Originally offered with a shortened deckhouse and larger cockpit, the “long house” version became standard in later models. Her roomy cockpit provides plenty of space for deck chairs or light-tackle fishing. The single 210hp Cummins diesel engine will cruise at 12–14 knots and reach a top speed of around 16 knots. Offered with or without a flybridge, the Blue Seas 31 is well constructed, always economical, and very easy on the eye.
