In the world of competitive sportfishing, innovation is what can make the difference between a respectable day on the water and a podium finish. And when it comes to innovative excellence, few technologies have reshaped the game as profoundly as omnidirectional (“omni”) sonar. Since its recreational breakthrough in the late 2010s, omni sonar has seen rapid adoption among elite anglers, permanently altering how sportfish yachts locate, target, and capitalize on opportunity.

Thanks to insights from Todd Tally, General Manager at Atlantic Marine Electronics, and HMY Yachts Sales Professional and Viking Product Specialist Rob Spano, we’re offering a closer look at why omni sonar has become an indispensable tool aboard today’s premier sportfishing yachts.

Sonar’s Modern Evolution

While omni sonar technology has existed for decades, it was once the exclusive domain of commercial fleets: an arena in which manufacturer Furuno established early dominance. That began to change in 2017, when the first recreational sportfishing installations proved the technology’s competitive edge. By 2019, demand surged, and today omni sonar has become standard equipment on new sportfish builds, as well as numerous refits on existing boats.

According to Todd, this class now hovers around a 99% adoption rate, and Rob confirms, likening omni sonar’s rise to the industry-disrupting arrival of Seakeeper two decades ago. “We’re not building a Viking without it,” he says. One of Rob’s clients, a third-time Viking owner, is excitedly awaiting the delivery of his recently purchased 82 Open Bridge Viking. Alongside an impressive five-stateroom layout, full-beam master, and Viking’s industry-leading performance, the yacht will also be equipped with Furuno’s latest CSH-10 Omni Sonar, ensuring multi-day fishing trips are not only comfortable, but also powered by the best in angling technology for a fierce competitive edge.

Pre- and Post-Omni Sonar Sportfishing: Key Differences

The difference between traditional sonar and omni technology is staggering, with the latest software empowering fishing crews to make real-time decisions. Conventional fish finders, on the other hand, only present limited views, displaying downward-facing images of what has already passed beneath the boat.

Though Furuno’s Searchlight Sonar improved coverage by providing steerable 360-degree scans, they required constant manual input for fully accurate imaging. During high-stakes tournament conditions, where targets move quickly and decisively, that inefficiency proved costly.

But omni sonar eliminates the guesswork. With the power of multiple transducers continuously scanning around the vessel, crews can gain a real-time, 360-degree view of their underwater environment. “It’s like watching a video game play out on the screen,” Rob says.

Key advantages include:

  • Superior image clarity with sharper, more defined targets.

  • True 360° accuracy, enabling precise positioning.

  • Reduced wake interference for cleaner reads underway.

  • Remote control functionality, allowing captains to adjust settings from the helm.

  • Near-instant live updates, refreshing roughly every half-second.

  • Enhanced crew coordination, with cockpit displays showing fish behavior and approach angles in real time.

The result is proactive, highly efficient fishing: precisely what competitive crews demand. “Considering the size of investment owners make in order to do one thing (fish), you might as well have the best tool available,” Todd reflects. Rob elaborates further, putting the perspective  in tournament terms: “When you consider the cost of construction and operation, omni sonar can increase catch rates and productivity tenfold.” After all, when offshore, time is the most limited resource available. Omni sonar ensures every minute and mile delivers maximum return.

Leading Omni Sonar Systems

As Todd points out, “The best omni sonar is the one you have on your boat.” All systems work well, and the key to leveraging it effectively is learning how to use your equipment properly. With that in mind, factors such as budgets and boat sizes can help guide you to one of the following brands trusted by HMY.

Furuno

Market leader Furuno pioneered recreational omni sonar in 2017 with their CSH-8L, and the system still remains widely installed. Its latest evolution, the CSH-10, offers enhanced stabilization, expanded features, and seamless integration with Furuno’s NavNet MFD suite. “It’s the first omni sonar truly designed with the recreational sportfish market in mind,” Todd notes.

Kongsberg SIMRAD

A strong alternative to Furuno CSH-10, Kongsberg SIMRAD features stabilization, PC-based architecture, varied frequency sets, and dual-range capability. Todd emphasizes that this system is distinct from Raymarine SIMRAD, whose easier installation comes with reduced processing power.

MAQ

A Canadian manufacturer with 30 years of sonar experience, MAQ stands out as a leader for identifying targets in shallow waters. With a range of sizes, it offers an excellent option for smaller sportfish vessels.

Who Should Consider Omni Sonar?

Over an impressively short period of time, omni sonar has evolved from a novelty to a near-universal standard. When it comes to your budget considerations, pricing typically ranges from $100,000 to $130,000, depending on the fabrication and installation required.

Though most clearly suited to large sportfish yachts, omni sonar has also become increasingly popular on select Valhalla center consoles, including 41-, 46-, and 55-foot models. If you’re captaining a smaller vessel, our team suggests you may be better served by the Raymarine SIMRAD or other scaled-down solutions.

If your sportfish yacht is of an older model, rest assured that retrofits are also common. In fact, they represent a good portion of the work done by experts like Atlantic Marine Electronics, whose teams stay busy upgrading existing fleets. The necessary mechanical or plumbing modifications may increase pricing slightly, but the benefits of improved fishing performance, enhanced resale value, and competitive advantage outweigh the added cost.

Whether you’re considering a new model or an upgrade, omni sonar represents a meaningful investment that will yield measurable differences. And for serious anglers, it’s no longer an advantage, but the new baseline for success offshore.
