Nestled eight miles off the Yucatán Peninsula beyond the shimmering shores of Cancún lies an island that holds a special place in the HMY community’s heart. A sanctuary of sandy beaches, charming village streets, and historic sites, Isla Mujeres draws travelers from around the world. Within its waters, an elite sportfishing experience awaits, challenging even seasoned anglers to joyfully refine their craft and emerge tournament-ready for the rest of the season.

With exclusive insights from longtime HMY clients, including Isla Mujeres charter operator Anthony Mendillo and two captains who frequent the island, here we unveil the magic of Isla Mujeres.

A Legacy Woven Through Generations

Much like HMY’s heritage, Anthony’s bond with Isla Mujeres is rooted in familial legacy. As a young mate, from 1988 to1996, Anthony worked with owner Haven Roosevelt and Captain Wink Dorzenbacher aboard the 43’ Merritt, “SHERIA III,” and would travel to the island in the spring before returning to school. Enrique Lima — co-founder of the first marina in the Isla Mujeres/Cozumel area — played a pivotal role in the island’s maritime evolution in partnership with longtime friend Walter Fondren III, and ultimately became Anthony’s father-in-law. To this day, the pier is known as both “Enrique’s Dock” and the “Fondren Dock,” and their legacies live on through generations, shaping the island’s rich nautical culture.

Anthony has since himself built a thriving enterprise: Keen M International, a bustling charter operation with over two decades of excellence. His wife and sister-in-law manage a hotel a short walk away, while their daughter helms the Blue Ballyhoo restaurant nearby.

Over the years, Anthony has personally witnessed the evolution of Isla Mujeres’ sportfishing scene. While the fishing season historically peaked in the spring months of April and May, the migration of prized fish now begins as early as January. “It’s changed the dynamic,” he explains. “Now, you can come here and catch all the sailfish you want and still be in the Bahamas for blue marlin tournaments.”

Luxury sportfishing yachts have also undergone a dramatic transformation since Anthony’s early days. Reflecting on his experience as a mate aboard a classic 43’ Merritt, Anthony fondly refers to it as a “tinker toy” in comparison to today’s powerhouse vessels — in particular, the Viking yachts that have redefined sportfishing. Having a high-performance marvel of speed and horsepower is now essential when navigating the often-turbulent waters of the Mexican Caribbean.

The Art and Challenge of Fishing Isla Mujeres

While sportfishing is indeed a major draw for the island, the waters of Isla Mujeres offer a variety of angling experiences. From tranquil sunset trolls to exhilarating high-stakes pursuits, Anthony’s four-vessel charter operation offers something for everyone. But no matter the fishing experience, the unique difficulty of these waters elevates them to legendary status.

“This is the place where the winning crews are made,” says Anthony. Between challenging currents, oscillating depths, and mandated dead bait trolling, these conditions will test even the most experienced anglers, especially as the Atlantic sailfish and bonitas who thrive in this area are notoriously elusive — demanding patience, precision, and skill mastery. “A crew that can succeed here can win East Coast tournaments,” Anthony affirms.

Anthony’s fishing excursions provide unparalleled, hands-on opportunities for anglers to sharpen their technique ahead of time. He personally coaches many of his clients over two to three days to perfect their approach. By the second day, most have grasped the nuances of the challenge, and his roster of devoted clients — some of whom have fished with him for over 20 years — is a testament to the caliber of his mentorship.

The HMY Community & Island Camaraderie

In conditions as demanding as these, unity is paramount. And indeed, the personal trust and connection shared  among anglers in Isla Mujeres is nothing short of remarkable. Anthony notes that his community even has its own radio channel — allowing captains to support one another and ensure everyone remains informed and connected.

HMY client John Brooks, captain of the 72’ Viking “Ditch Digger,” echoes this sentiment. “People help each other out — it’s very tight-knit. The camaraderie at the pier is second-to-none.”

Jamie Ralph, captain of “Old No. 7,” a custom-built 70’ Spencer Sportfish, concurs: “People help each other and will call out where they’ve made catches so everyone has an idea of where to head.”

Planning Your Voyage

Like fishing its aquamarine waters, getting to Isla Mujeres calls for the right equipment, preparation, and an understanding of the elements. Both Captain John and Captain Jamie, for example, stop at Stock Island in Key West to fuel up before making the 335 nautical-mile journey.

They also advise monitoring for the right weather window, and traveling in convoy for safety. Following the coast of Cuba offers the most efficient route, though it’s important to be prepared for shifting currents and to conserve fuel during the entire journey when possible. Also be prepared to meet with multiple customs and immigrations departments, including several that will board your vessel, although Captain Jamie notes that these encounters have always been friendly and welcoming.

As the island draws near, the tides become increasingly formidable, making a robust, expertly crafted vessel an indispensable asset. Having advanced technology is also essential for sound navigation, and apps like TZ iBoat can prove useful in guiding you to your next fuel stop. With these tools — and a prepared, adventurous spirit — an unforgettable journey awaits you.
