For discerning yacht owners, chartering is an art form — a blend of sophistication, precision, and uncompromising excellence. Beyond acquiring a vessel of distinction, curating the perfect onboard experience requires an unwavering commitment to superior amenities, state-of-the-art technology, and, importantly, an elite crew dedicated to flawless service. Maintaining such a prestigious vessel is a continuous endeavor, demanding meticulous attention to detail.
Lee Mandel, the visionary owner of the exquisite 2011 116’ Azimut Grande Motor Yacht, “Tail Lights,” understands this challenge intimately. With a passion for pushing boundaries, he recently orchestrated a remarkable refit of his superyacht — an ambitious project that most would anticipate taking months, yet Lee and his team executed in just 45 days.
Here, we share an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at what all of this means for the future of one of the world’s most sought-after charter yachts.
A Grand Transformation: The “Tail Lights” Refit

In July 2024, “Tail Lights” underwent an extensive refit, completed in record time by September. Lee personally oversaw every element, spending up to 18 hours a day on site, 7 days a week, coordinating 72 vendors in a flawlessly choreographed execution of the following enhancements:
- Brand New Engines: Opting for full replacements over a standard overhaul, Lee ensured “Tail Lights” now boasts zero-hour engines for peak performance and reliability.
- Generator Upgrades: Alongside the engines, the yacht’s two generators were completely replaced for uninterrupted power and efficiency. The four most important mechanical components of the yacht are now brand new.
- Advanced Climate Control: A proactive replacement of the chiller plant guarantees continuous air conditioning, delivering the ultimate onboard comfort.
- Revolutionary Multi-Stage Fuel Filtration System: Lee spearheaded, designed, and developed one of the most sophisticated fuel filtration systems in yachting, featuring three layers of protection to ensure only the purest fuel powers the vessel.
- Superstructure Repaint: Switching to a non-metallic shade of gray allows for seamless touch-ups without requiring dry-dock time.
- Internal Paint Protection: The yacht has also received a layer of internal paint protection to preserve its refined finishes.
- Luxury Interior Enhancements: State-of-the-art audio and lighting upgrades, along with elevated housewares and bedding, enhance the onboard ambiance.
- Cutting-Edge Connectivity: Updated Starlink systems provide uninterrupted multiple channels of communication, whether for business, leisure, or safety purposes.
The Intricate Dance: Mastering a Rapid Refit

To refit a vessel as large and multifaceted as "Tail Lights" is a feat in itself. Achieving such an extensive transformation within a compressed timeline was, as Lee puts it, “nothing short of a miracle.” He began the full time job of planning nine months in advance, ensuring all materials were secured and waiting at the shipyard before work commenced.
From scheduling cranes and their operators to accommodating unpredictable weather, there were many variables potentially impacting this coordinated ballet. Knowing that vendors needed to work with the utmost concentration, Lee provided meals and played music to create a performance-driven atmosphere. He also tracked their arrival and departure using a sign-in system that he created and checked in at the end of each day to ensure work was progressing to his standards.
A Philosophy of Hands-On Yacht Ownership

Lee’s dedication extends beyond the refit, with a philosophy of yacht ownership rooted in an obsession with excellence. Personally inspecting the vessel multiple times per season, running personalized crew training, reviewing guest feedback, and maintaining an intimate understanding of every detail, he approaches “Tail Lights” with a passion to make it a pinnacle of hospitality.
As the owner of the busiest charter in the world, Lee knows that “Tail Lights” owes its success not only to its superior mechanical integrity and opulent amenities but also to its exceptional captain and crew. Without them, it’s an exceptional transportation vessel, but the ultimate charter experience is truly shaped by their dedication and expertise. Their diligence and hard work are rewarded with more time off than crews traditionally receive. Utilizing a unique rotational program, it’s all hands off deck for members between charters, giving them additional rest to return fully recharged.
The results speak for themselves. “Tail Lights” is in constant demand, with charters booked six to eight months in advance and select dates reserved up to two years ahead. The crew thrives in an environment where excellence is both expected and rewarded, and even the vendors involved in the refit describe it as the most enjoyable project they’ve been a part of.
A Legacy of Luxury
