Another season of the South Carolina Governor's Cup Billfishing Series is in the books, and 2026 delivered some of the strongest numbers the program has seen in years. As a conservation-driven program of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR), the Governor's Cup isn't just about who tops the leaderboard. It's about the catch and effort data SCDNR biologists collect at every tournament, which make up the longest continuous time series of billfish catch and fishing effort on the Atlantic coast. None of that would be possible without the captains and crews who compete each year.
By the Numbers: 2026 Overall Highlights
This year's Series brought together five tournaments and 108 unique boats, which combined to release 493 billfish across 363 fishing trips, an average of 4.6 billfish released per boat. Sailfish drove the bulk of the action, accounting for 78.3% of all billfish releases. On the meatfish side, anglers caught 887 fish and released 322 of them.
Charleston Billfish Invitational Kicks Off the Series
The Series opened with the Charleston Billfish Invitational, where crews released two blue marlin and 14 sailfish for 16 total billfish releases, a solid start to the offshore season.
58th Annual Georgetown Blue Marlin Tournament
Georgetown drew the largest fleet of the Series, with 56 boats competing, and posted a stat that hadn't been seen since 2015: 10 white marlin released in a single tournament.
HMY Lowcountry Cup: The Series' Breakout Weekend
If one stop defined the 2026 Series, it was the HMY Lowcountry Cup. HMY Yacht Sales hosted the fourth annual event May 27–30 at Toler's Cove Marina in Charleston. As the third leg of the Governor's Cup, it once again brought elite sportfishing teams together for three days of offshore competition and dockside camaraderie.
On the water, the Lowcountry Cup put up the strongest blue marlin numbers of the Series, with 42 blue marlin released, the most of any tournament this year. Add 75 sailfish and one white marlin, and the fleet released 118 billfish in total. A record number of boats entered the event, and Thursday's gray skies and steady rain gave way to a bite that carried the fleet through the weekend.
The tournament's signature moment came Saturday, when Team Game On hooked a blue marlin with only minutes left on the clock. The radio call had the docks buzzing before boats were even back at the slip. Game On went on to take first place overall with 3,400 points, followed by Claytime (3,000 points) and Rascal (2,800 points).
Carolina Billfish Classic
The Classic posted the best per-boat release rate of any single tournament in the Series, averaging 3.29 billfish released per boat. Crews combined for 79 sailfish and 13 blue marlin released.
Edisto Invitational Billfish Tournament
The Series wrapped up with its biggest single-tournament haul: the Edisto Invitational Billfish anglers released 139 total billfish, including a Series-high 125 sailfish.
The Bigger Picture
Zooming out, the 2026 numbers reflect a fishery that continues to trend upward. Blue marlin releases totaled 96 for the year, double the 26-year average of 48. Sailfish releases (385) came in well above the 2000–2026 yearly average of 142, part of a sharp climb in sailfish activity that has defined the last several seasons of the Series. Participation rebounded strongly too: 108 boats fished in 2026, continuing a steady recovery from the pandemic-era low in 2020.
Among meatfish, dolphin remained the dominant catch, with 765 landed and released combined, followed by tuna (73) and wahoo (49).
Looking Ahead
With five tournaments, 108 boats, and nearly 500 billfish released, the 2026 Governor's Cup Series reinforced what makes it one of the premier, and most important, billfishing programs on the Atlantic coast. Between record participation at the HMY Lowcountry Cup and the Series' continued 100% blue marlin release streak, South Carolina's offshore fishery and the conservation data behind it are both in strong shape heading into 2027.
