The 40 Explorer was the final entry in the Cape Dory series of Down East-style cruisers produced in the early 1990s. She’s constructed on a modified-V hull with cored hullsides, moderate beam, and a full-length keel that offers significant protection to the running gear. Below deck, the big, wide-open salon of the Explorer is unusually spacious for a 40-footer, a design feat made possible by shrinking the cockpit dimensions down to the minimum. A lower helm with deck access door was standard, and the teak cabinetry is finished to the same high standards common to all Cape Dory boats. There are two staterooms and two heads (both sharing a common shower stall) on the lower level, and the master stateroom is particularly comfortable and roomy. Topside, the flybridge is arranged with the helm forward and guest seating aft. Additional features include underwater exhausts, a teak cockpit sole, extra-wide side decks, a roomy engine room and a transom door. Note the offset bridge ladder. A traditional boat with a good deal of eye appeal, standard 300hp Cat 3116 diesels cruise the Cape Dory 40 at 18 knots (low 20s top)
