The 38 Excalibur was one of several Wellcraft models manufactured in Australia by Riviera Marine. She was built on a solid fiberglass deep-V hull with a rounded keel and a narrow, performance-enhancing beam. With her long foredeck and sleek profile, the 38 Excalibur was considered by many to be one of the better-looking express boats of her era. Fit and finish was very good—the tooling and gelcoat work is very impressive considering her reasonable price. The interior, which is small compared with most of her wider-beam competitors, is arranged with the master stateroom forward (with a curtain for privacy), posh Ultrasuede salon sofa, full-service galley, and an aft bunk suitable for a couple of kids. On deck, cockpit seating is comprised of a two-person helm with a bucket seat opposite and an L-shaped aft lounge. A wet bar (with refrigerator) is standard as is a transom door and shower. Engine access—under the aft cockpit seat—is good, but the Excalibur’s side decks are narrow. Note that the helm seat can be adjusted electrically. A good performer with MerCruiser 385hp gas sterndrives, she’ll cruise at 30–32 knots (40+ top).
