Viking Yachts sets the standards for big convertibles these days. Where once Bertram and Hatteras called the shots, today the leader in convertible design and production is clearly Viking. With convertible models ranging in size up to 82 feet (as of mid 2012, that is), the 54 is barely midsize in today’s Viking convertible fleet. There is much to admire about this sophisticated yacht; powerful styling, state-of-the-art hull construction, huge 160-square-foot cockpit complete with mezzanine deck, and luxury-class accommodations with the amenities of a small motoryacht. Her spacious three-stateroom, two-head interior is an awesome blend of high-gloss teak joinery, Ultraleather upholstery, Corian counters, and high-end appliances and hardware. The L-lounge in the salon has rod storage under, and a laundry center is behind the teak companionway door. Both heads include separate stall showers. The 54’s mezzanine deck features lounge seating to starboard and, to port, a hinged seat with freezer under. A meticulous engine room, world-class helm layout, and near-flawless fit and finish are reminders of Viking’s production-boat excellence. MAN 1550hp V12 engines cruise at 34–35 knots (about 40 top).
