Not recalled as one of Viking’s more successful models, the 48 Motor Yacht is really a reworked Viking 48 Convertible (1985–90); the hull and deckhouse are the same, Viking simply replaced the cockpit with an aft stateroom and enclosed aft deck. (Maybe not as simple as that, but close enough.) Her rakish styling differed sharply from most motor yachts of her era, and her spirited performance—close to 25 knots at cruise—was exceptional for a motor yacht this size in the late 1980s. Her standard three-stateroom interior is arranged with walkaround double berths in the fore and aft staterooms, and single beds in the guest cabin. There’s a full bathtub in the aft head compartment, and the salon—open to the galley and dinette—is spacious and well finished. The enclosed afterdeck (complete with wing doors and a wet bar) is configured as a second salon that is clearly the social center of the boat. Topside, the flybridge (also borrowed from the 48 Convertible) will seat eight. Standard 565hp 6V92 diesels cruise at 20–22 knots. Optional (and more popular) 735hp 8V92s provide a fast 25-knot cruising speed. The Viking 55 Cockpit MY (1988 only) is this same boat with a cockpit and additional fuel.
