The Viking 44 Motor Yacht replaced the 43 Double Cabin model in the Viking fleet in 1982. Designed for fast and comfortable cruising—and showing the sleek, low-profile styling characteristics of the Viking 46 Convertible—the 44 Motor Yacht is slightly larger inside than the 43 Double Cabin and carries more fuel and water. While the floorplans are similar, the 44 has a larger main salon with the forward companionway offset to starboard. The interior—considered very elegant by 1980s standards—is an attractive blend of natural teak woodwork, designer fabrics and plush furnishings. Topside, there’s plenty of space on the full-width aft deck for entertaining, and the flybridge is arranged with guest seating forward of the helm console. (Note that the bridge profile was updated in 1989.) Additional features include a wide side decks, an optional hardtop and arch, and steel engine mounts—a Viking trademark. On the downside, the engine room is a tight fit. A good running boat with optional 485hp 6-71s, the Viking 44 MY will cruise at 22–24 knots. The Viking 50 Cockpit Motor Yacht (1983–87) is this boat with a cockpit addition.
