Forerunner of the Topaz 37 (1986–91) and a good-selling boat in her own right, the Topaz 36 established the company’s name with the hard-core fishing community in the early 1980s. Notably, she was among just a few express fishing boats produced of her era. Constructed on a solid fiberglass hull with a fairly wide beam, her roomy cockpit and large bridge deck marked her as a purebred fishing boat. With a low center of gravity, the 36 is a stable boat with a tower but her relatively flat aftersections can mean a hard ride in a chop. She was designed from the ground up as a dedicated sportfisherman, and her uncluttered cockpit—with room to mount a full-size chair—appealed tournament-level anglers. A large in-deck fish box and teak covering boards were standard. The below deck accommodations are suitable for overnight expeditions with V-berths forward, convertible dinette, full galley, and standup head with a separate stall shower. The Topaz 36 was available with a variety of diesel engine options from Volvo, GM, and Caterpillar. Among them, twin 355hp Cats cruise economically in the low 20s and reach a top speed in the neighborhood of 26–27 knots.
