The Topaz 29 was a popular boat in the 1980s thanks to an impressive combination of rugged construction, a maximum emphasis on cockpit space, and single-minded devotion to fishability. The relatively wide bow section of the Topaz increases forward, which means the bow stays up in a head sea, thereby producing more spray than a sharp-entry hull would. Like all Topaz models, the 29’s bi-level cockpit dominates the layout and measures about half of the boat’s overall length. The engines are located beneath the bridge deck, and there’s room for a full-size marlin chair in the aft cockpit where a large insulated fish box is built into the sole. Below, the cabin accommodations are simple and straightforward with upper and lower berths forward that sleep three, an enclosed head, and a compact galley with stove, sink and refrigerator. Recognized as a competent and good-handling offshore fisherman, most Topaz 29s were sold with the factory tower and Volvo diesels. Twin 200hp Volvos cruise in the mid 20s and reach a top speed of around 30 knots. Topaz sold the molds and tooling in 1988, and the 29 was reintroduced the following year as the Bimini 29 (1989–93).
