Introduced in 2005, the SeaVee 290 Open is an updated version of the companys original 290 Open (200004) with a wider beam (8'3"" vs. 9'0"") and a revised deck layout. In most respects the two boats are very similar, but the cockpit of the second-generation 290 Open is bigger and the increased beam results in a more stable fishing platform at low speeds. With lots of space around the console and abundant storage, the 290 is spacious for a fishing boat this size. The hull is vacuum bagged to reduce weight, the 290s steep 25 degrees of transom deadrise ensures a smooth ride to and from the fishing grounds. Standard features include an integrated swim/dive platform, anchor locker, in-deck fish box forward, 50-gallon transom livewell, transom door, fresh/raw-water washdowns, leaning post, pop-up cleats, front console seat, lockable rod storage, and a walk-in console with forward entry. An innovative cooler slides out on a track from under the leaning post. A Luxury Edition (LE) available since 2016 offers molded-in forward seating and an optional rear bench. The 290 was updated in 2018 with increased fuel capacity. About 50 knots top with Mercury 250 Verados and 5560 top with twin 350s.

The SeaVee 290 Open (not to be confused with the more recent 290B model introduced in 2005) is a semi-custom center console whose uncluttered cockpit and high-performance deep-V hull made her one of the top-tier fishing platforms in her class. Built on a lightweight (vacuum-bagged) hull with a narrow 8'3"" beam, few boats can surpass the SeaVee 290 for rough-water handling characteristics. Her flush-level cockpit offers exceptional 360-degree fishability, and an extensive list of factory options allowed owners to equip the 290 with any number of amenities. Although cockpit space is modest compared with most 29-foot center consoles, fit and finish is second to none. Sea Vee offered this boat in both outboard and sterndrive (single diesel) configurations. Standard features include an integrated swim/dive platform with ladder, anchor locker, trim tabs, large in-deck fish box (forward), in-deck storage boxes (6), walk-in console with marine head, 35-gallon in-floor livewell, pop-up cleats, recessed bow rails, cockpit bolsters, cockpit rod storage, and deluxe leaning post. A fast ridewell over 45 knots top with Mercury 250hp outboards.
