Marketed as a serious fishing boat, the Sea Ray 440 Convertible (called the 430 Convertible in 1988) is a scaled-down version of Sea Ray’s equally unimpressive 460 Convertible built during 1987–88. A well-styled boat by the standards of her day with rakish lines and an aggressive profile, the 430/440 failed to attract the attention of hardcore anglers more disposed to the Bertram, Viking, and Hatteras nameplates. She was built on a solid fiberglass hull with prop pockets, moderate transom deadrise, and a generous 14-foot beam. With her Euro-style interior (lots of curves, pastel fabrics, and plastic laminates), the 440 is more family cruiser than fishboat. Her two-stateroom floorplan includes a wet bar and U-shaped dinette in the salon, a large master stateroom forward with a built-in vanity, and a guest cabin with upper/lower bunks. The galley is down in this layout, and earth-tone fabrics and wall coverings decorate the interior. The cockpit, with direct access to a tight-fitting engine room, is large enough for a mounted chair. Additional features include a transom door, a removable in-deck fish box, cockpit shower, and a swim platform. Cat 375hp diesels cruise at 20 knots and reach a top speed of 24–25 knots.

Flashy Sea Ray convertible—a scaled-down version of the company’s larger 460 model—failed to impress serious anglers.

Eurostyle interior with lots of curves, pastel fabrics is way dated by modern standards. Galley-down floorplan boasts large salon with convertible dinette, wet bar, entertainment center. Large cockpit with molded tackle center, built-in fish box has direct access to engineroom.

Called 430 Conv. in 1988; 440 in 1989–91.
