A popular model, the sporty appearance of the Sea Ray 290 Sundancer went a long way toward insuring her success in what is arguably the most competitive segment of the midcabin cruiser market. Bold styling aside, the 290 Sundancer also scored with the fine finish and attractive furnishings Sea Ray is known for. Built on a deep-V hull with a sweeping sheer and high forward freeboard, the Sundancer’s accommodations are as practical as they are comfortable. Her expansive cockpit—less crowded than most, but with less seating as well—includes a wet bar with Corian counter and sink, drink holders, and a designated space for the carry-on cooler. A transom shower and transom storage locker are standard, and the forward-facing radar arch added much to the 290’s stylish lines. Below decks, the well-appointed interior is a blend of high-gloss cherry cabinets, Ultraleather upholstery, and deep pile carpeting. An innovative double berth forward easily converts into an aft-facing settee, and privacy curtains separate the fore and aft berths from the main cabin. A single 375hp MerCruiser I/O will cruise the Sundancer at 18–20 knots (high 20s top). Twin MerCruiser 260hp I/Os cruise in the mid 20s (about 40 knots top).

A handsome boat by the standards of her day with first-rate accommodations, the Sea Ray 290 Sundancer (note an earlier 290 Sundancer built in 1994–97) offered just about everything one could desire in a quality midsize family cruiser. Sea Ray always builds a solid boat, and at over 10,000 pounds, the Sundancer is no lightweight. The interior was originally offered in two configurations: Plan A has a convertible dinette forward, and Plan B has a double berth forward with the dinette table in front of the starboard-side settee. In 1999 a new cabin layout replaced the original floorplans. Topside, the cockpit includes a portside sun lounge and a removable aft bench seat in addition to a very stylish helm console. Standard features include a cockpit shower and wet bar, excellent storage, a drop-down helm seat, and a transom door. Note that the side decks are narrow and the engine room is a tight fit. Among several engine options, a single 310hp MerCruiser sterndrive will cruise the 290 Sundancer at 18–19 knots (about 25 knots top), and twin 260hp MerCruisers cruise in the low 20s and reach a top speed of around 35 knots.

Overview

Redesigned version of previous 290 Sundancer (1994–97) boasts enlarged cockpit, updated styling, restyled interior.

Overview

Topside highlights include extended swim platform, portside longe seat (opposite helm), wet bar, flip-up helm seat. Rear bench seat can be removed to free up cockpit space.Offered with three interior layouts.

Comments

Side decks are narrow. Engine compartment is a tight fit with twins. Heavy boat for her size.

Performance

Cruise at 20 knots with single 310hp Merc I/O; twin 260hp Mercs cruise in the mid 20s.

Sea Ray nearly always gets it right when it comes to their series of family cruisers, and the introduction of the 290 Sundancer in 1994 is a good illustration of why this company has long dominated the market for upmarket express boats. Loaded with amenities, this versatile weekender is a 1990s blend of crisp styling, comfortable accommodations and good performance. She rides on a solid fiberglass hull with a sharp entry and a moderate 9-foot, 8-inch beam. Two floorplans were offered in the 290, one with a U-shaped dinette and the other with a conventional dinette with facing seats. Both staterooms are fitted with double beds and privacy curtains, and storage space—with two large hanging lockers—is notable. On deck, the 290’s cockpit is arranged with an elevated triple-wide helm seat, and a U-shaped lounge aft converts into a sun pad. There’s a protected chart flat at the helm—a thoughtful touch. On the downside, the engine compartment is a tight fit. A single 300hp MerCruiser sterndrive will cruise the 290 Sundancer at 20 knots (30+ knots top), and twin 190hp I/Os cruise in the mid 20s (about 35 knots top).
