Designed by Mark Ellis, the Legacy 40 Sedan introduced in 1995 was Freedom Yachts first entry into the powerboat market. Shes built on a fully cored hull with a sharp bow entry, wide 13'7"" beam, and a deep skeg that protects the prop and rudder in the single-screw version. Not inexpensive, the finely crafted interior of the Legacy 40 is a blend of rich mahogany (or cherry) woodwork and quality furnishings and hardware. Her standard galley-down floorplan includes two comfortable staterooms, each with a double berth. While the salon dimensions are modest compared with some 40-footers, large cabin windows provide panoramic views of the water, and the teak-and-holly flooring found throughout the interior adds the right touch of nautical elegance. A lower helm was standard, and wide side decks (and salon deck door) make getting around easy. Among several engine options available over the years, a single 420hp Cat diesel will cruise an early-model Legacy 40 at 1618 knots. Later models with twin 370hp Cummins cruise at 2224 knots. Note that a single-stateroom Express model was also available.
