The Riviera 42 is an Australian built convertible whose solid construction and sleek styling have great appeal for American buyers. Riviera is the only foreign fishboat manufacturer to have succeeded in winning the hearts of American anglers thanks in large measure to the company’s reputation for reliability and strong resale values. Built on a solid fiberglass hull with a wide beam and forward collision bulkhead, the two-stateroom, two-head interior of the Riviera 42 was available with or without a lower helm. A unique triple-bunk guest cabin to starboard has side-by-side bunks as well as an upper berth, and the master stateroom comes with an island berth and private ensuite head. High-gloss cabinetry, a salon dinette, and a well-equipped galley combine to make this interior as comfortable as it is practical. Topside, the Riviera’s flybridge is somewhat unique in that the helm is to starboard with the companion seat on the centerline—a design that means the driver doesn’t have to get up to let someone pass behind him. A sun shade shelters the cockpit, and a bait prep center, in-deck fish box, cooler/freezer, and trash receptacle are standard. Cruise in the low 20s with 480hp diesels (26–28 knots top).

One of the earliest Riviera models introduced into the U.S., the 42 Convertible was marketed as a “…Bertram look-alike, built like a Blackfin and finished like a Hatteras.” In fact, the 42 does look a little like a Bertram, and it’s also true that her construction is very sturdy indeed. Like all Rivieras, she was heavily built on a solid fiberglass semi-V hull with a shallow keel and a collision bulkhead forward. Below, the two-stateroom, single-head floorplan is arranged with a mid-level galley that extends well into the salon. Both staterooms have double berths, and a settee in the passageway converts into over/under bunks—berths for six not counting the convertible salon dinette. Because she comes standard with a lower helm, the front windows are not glassed over (as they are in most American boats), which adds to the impression of space in the salon. The cockpit is large enough for serious fishing pursuits and includes a molded tackle center, walk-in access to the engine room, transom door, and steps at the corners leading to the wide side decks. Among several engine options offered by Riviera, twin 435hp Cat diesels cruise the 42 in the low 20s and reach 26–27 knots wide open.
