The PT 38 Double Cabin is a good example of the typical Taiwan-built trawler imported in great numbers during the 1980s. Inexpensive to buy (largely because of a then-favorable exchange rate) and noted for their traditional all-teak interiors, these boats were heavily built on solid fiberglass hulls. In the case of the PT 38, her semi-displacement hull is designed with a well flared bow, moderate beam, and a long, shallow keel. Below deck, the galley-up, two-stateroom floorplan of the PT 38 is arranged with double berths fore and aft and a deckhouse galley aft in the salon (rather than forward where most on-deck galleys are located). Outside access is easy on this boat since there are two sliding doors in the salon rather than just a single door at the helm. Storage is excellent (thanks to three large hanging lockers), and a tub/shower is found in the aft head. Lots of exterior teak trim on this boat—including leak-prone window frames—to keep owners busy. A single 120hp Lehman diesel will cruise at 7–8 knots, and twin 120hp Lehmans (or 135-Perkins) diesels cruise at 10–12 knots.
