Phoenix had a reputation for building good fishing boats so it was something of a surprise when they introduced the Euro-style Blackhawk 909 express cruiser back in 1985. Built on a solid fiberglass hull with prop pockets, the 909 was a sterndrive boat—also a first for any Phoenix model—until 1986 when inboards became available. A molded full-length inner liner used to create the interior added a good deal of rigidity and strength to the hull. Below deck, a U-shaped lounge/dinette at the bow seats five and converts into a large double berth at night. Another couple can sleep in the small midcabin tucked beneath the bridge deck. While the absence of interior bulkheads makes the interior seem very open, the lack of natural cabin lighting and ventilation is apparent. Additional features include a unique sliding transom door, curved windshield, good headroom below, and an integral swim platform and bow pulpit. Twin 270hp gas inboards cruise the Blackhawk 909 at a respectable 22 knots and reach a top speed in the neighborhood of 30 knots. Twin 200hp Volvo diesels were optional. Note the modest 140-gallon fuel capacity.
