A handsome boat with an aggressive, low-profile appearance, the Phoenix 38 was an expensive boat in her day with state-of-the-art construction and upscale accommodations. She was built on a solid fiberglass hull with a wide beam, a full-length inner liner, and prop pockets to reduce the shaft angles. Phoenix offered a pair of two-stateroom floorplans in the 38. The original layout—with a serving counter overlooking the galley—was roundly criticized for its small salon dimensions. A more open layout introduced in later years remedied this problem by removing the counter and moving the galley into the salon. Both interiors were tastefully furnished with a blend of teak joinery, quality hardware, and high-end furnishings. Topside, the cockpit, with just over 100 square feet of fishing space, came with a transom door and an engine room access hatch—a rarity in a 38-foot boat. Note that the salon’s aft bulkhead is angled to improve the flow of fresh air in the cockpit while underway. A solid front windshield became optional in 1988. Twin 375hp Cat diesels cruise at 18–20 knots and top out in the mid 20s, and optional 450hp 6-71s cruise the Phoenix 38 at 22 knots and reach 25–26 knots wide open.
