Bold styling and rugged construction characterize the 38 SFX Convertible, the largest boat in the late-model Phoenix fleet. (Note that she was called the Phoenix 37 Convertible until 1995.) She’s built on the same hull as the company’s earlier 38 Convertible (1982–88) with full-length inner liner, prop pockets to reduce shaft angles, and a shallow keel for directional stability. Her two-stateroom, galley-up interior is arranged with an island berth forward and stacked single berths in the guest stateroom. Teak or white ash interior woodwork were offered, and a glassed-over deckhouse windshield was optional. With her large and uncluttered cockpit, the 38 SFX is designed to meet the needs of serious fishermen. A transom door was standard along with cockpit bolsters, a molded tackle center, livewell, rod storage, and two in-deck fish boxes. Air intake vents forward of the bridge channel air into the cockpit to reduce diesel fumes—a clever idea. Twin 375hp Cat diesels cruise at 22–23 knots, and 485hp 6-71s cruise at 26–27 knots. Newer models with a pair of 435hp Cats cruise at a 25 knots and top out in the high 20s.
