Introduced in 2001, the Monterey 298 Super Sport remains one of the biggest open-bow runabouts ever produced in this country. Built on a deep-V hull with a wide 9'6"" beam, the focal point of the 298 is her large cockpit with its aft bench seat that folds down to increase the size of the existing sun pad. A contoured lounge is opposite the helm, abutting a small console with wet bar and sink, and the double-wide helm seat has a flip-up bolster for standup driving. An unusual feature of the 298 SS is the double berth concealed within the portside console. An enclosed head is in the opposite console, and both of these compartments are fitted with an opening port for ventilation. There’s plenty of storage under the back-to-back helm seats, and the sun pad lifts up to reveal the engine compartment. Standard features include an extended swim platform, docking lights, pull-up cleats, transom shower, fender storage, and VacuFlush toilet. An excellent open-water performer, twin 280hp Volvo gas sterndrives cruise the 298 SS in the low 30s and reach a top speed of 45 knots.
