The Mikelson 50 Sportfisher evolved from the Mikelson 48 Sedan, an innovative West Coast cruiser whose sleek, low-profile appearance, highly efficient hull, and unique under-cockpit engine location set her apart from just about every other boat her size on the market. Following up on the sales success of the 48 Sedan, the 50 Sportfish model came out in 1992 with an enlarged cockpit and a conventional transom rather than the reverse transom of the original 48. Built on a fully cored hull with rounded bilges and a wide beam, the 50 is a light boat for her size—a feature that results in surprising performance figures given her relatively small engines. Offered with two or three staterooms, the spacious interior dimensions rival those of a larger boat. One of the more interesting features of the Mikelson 50 is her huge flybridge with its circular dinette and fore and aft helm consoles. Additional features include excellent range, teak or cherry interior cabinetry, good engine access, and a double bait tank built into the transom. A good-selling model (over 80 Mikelson 50s were sold), twin 540hp Cummins V-drive diesels cruise at 20–22 knots (mid 20s top).
