The Marine Trader 44 Tri-Cabin comes about as close as you can get to describing the quintessential low-priced Taiwan trawler. A popular boat, she may not have been the last word in quality, and the wiring was often a problem, but her all-teak interior, salty appearance, and rugged fiberglass construction were enough to win over many of her detractors. Equally important, the 44 Tri-Cabin had a very practical layout. Two floorplans were offered over the years: The two-stateroom version was the most popular, but many were sold with the optional three-stateroom layout. Either way, a lower helm was standard, and two salon deck doors provide easy deck access. In the aft stateroom, another door allows direct access to the cockpit. Topside, deep bulwarks and wide side decks make getting around easy. Additional features include a mast and boom assembly, a big engine room, generous storage, a spacious flybridge, and a teak swim platform. On the downside, the teak window frames usually leak, sometimes badly. A single or twin 120hp Lehman diesel will cruise the Marine Trader 44 at 78 knots.
