The Mainship 36 Double Cabin was introduced in 1984 at a time when aft-cabin motor cruisers under 40 feet were enjoying a good deal of popularity. Aside from her conservative styling, what set the Mainship 36 apart from competitive models was an easily driven, semi-displacement hull designed for efficient low-speed operation while retaining the ability to run at higher planing speeds. The belowdeck accommodations are arranged with the galley and dinette down a few steps from the salon. A lower helm was standard in the salon, and a walkaround double berth is located in the full-beam aft stateroom. With both the dinette and salon sofa converted, the Mainship will sleep eight—not bad for a 36-foot boat. (In 1985, the original teak interior was replaced with light oak woodwork.) Topside, the flybridge is set up with the helm forward and guest seating aft, and there’s room on the full-width afterdeck for a few pieces of deck furniture. With just 270hp Crusader gas engines, the Mainship 36 delivers a relatively good turn of speed. She’ll cruise at 14–15 knots and reach a top speed in the low 20s. Note that she was called the Nantucket 36 Double Cabin in 1987.
