A hugely successful model (over 125 were built), the Hatteras 60 Convertible was once viewed as the ultimate combination of engineering excellence and sportfishing luxury. Offered with an open or enclosed flybridge, the 60 rides on a solid fiberglass hull with a wide 18-foot beam and deep keel. Although the dark teak interior is dated by modern decor standards, the floorplan features a roomy salon with entertainment center and L-shaped sofa, U-shaped galley forward with under-counter refrigeration, and dinette opposite the galley. There are three staterooms and three full heads below. The amidships master stateroom has a walkaround queen berth, and the guest cabins have over/under berths. A separate utility room forward of the engine compartment houses the air-conditioning compressors, washer/dryer, workbench, etc. The massive 175-square-foot cockpit includes a molded tackle center, bait freezer, in-deck storage, and direct access to the engine room. In 1986, a High Performance model became available with bigger 825hp 12V71 engines (20–22 knots cruise), balsa coring in the hullsides, and beefed-up internal strengthening. Standard Detroit 650hp 12V71 diesels cruise at 16–18 knots (20 knots top).

With her long foredeck, graceful deckhouse, and massive cockpit the Hatteras 60 Convertible (note that an earlier Hatteras 60 was built in 1977–86) was an impressive display of boat-building excellence by the standards of her day. She rides on a beefy modified-V hull with cored hullsides, propeller tunnels, and a deep keel. At least eight floorplans were offered in the 60—far more than any previous Hatteras convertible. The standard layout, updated in 2003, is arranged with three staterooms with the owner’s cabin amidships and a spacious VIP stateroom at the bow. Regardless of the floorplan configuration, these are lush accommodations indeed for a sportfishing boat. On deck, the huge cockpit of the Hatteras 60 is fitted with a full array of fishing amenities. The flybridge could be fully enclosed and air-conditioned for those who sought the ultimate in luxury. Additional features include frameless cabin windows, a choice of interior woodwork, and a meticulously finished standup engine room. Standard 1,400hp Cat diesels cruise at a fast 27–28 knots (low 30s top). Note that she was replaced in 2007 with all-new Hatteras 60 Convertible.
