The original Hatteras 48 Motor Yacht (a newer model came out in 1990) was built on what Hatteras called a “dual mode” hull designed for efficient low-speed operation while retaining planing-speed capability with larger engines. (Fuel efficiency was a serious marketing tool in the early 1980s when the 48 was introduced.) Showing a slightly trawler-style profile, the Hatteras 48 was heavily built on a solid fiberglass hull with shallow deadrise aft and a long keel for directional stability. Her standard three-stateroom interior is arranged with two staterooms aft of the salon, three heads (but only one stall shower), and a lower helm. An optional four-stateroom floorplan eliminated the dinette. The spacious afterdeck of the Hatteras 48 is one of the largest to be found on a boat this size—indeed, the aft deck dimensions actually exceed those of the salon. Additional features include a radar arch, hardtop, wing doors, an integral bow pulpit, and a swim platform. Detroit 285hp 6-71N diesels deliver an efficient 1 mpg at her 8-knot displacement speed, but lack the power to get up on plane with a full load. Detroit 425hp 6V92 diesels cruise at a more robust 14–15 knots.

The Hatteras 48 Motor Yacht is a roomy aft cabin cruising yacht whose chief attributes are her contemporary styling and quality construction. A notable feature of the Hatteras 48 is her spacious aft deck with its custom wet bar, wing doors, and side windows panels. Below, the standard three-stateroom interior has the master stateroom aft with an ensuite head with stall shower. Immediately forward of the master, to starboard, is a guest stateroom with upper and lower berths. Opposite is the guest head with stall shower. Entering the spacious salon, a U-shaped sofa and coffee table are to port and the entertainment center is to starboard. The galley and dinette are forward in the salon, directly beneath large front windows that admit tons of natural lighting. Continuing forward is the guest VIP stateroom with ensuite head and stall shower. Note that a revised floorplan beginning in 1994 has the guest staterooms forward of the salon resulting in a larger, more comfortable master stateroom. No lightweight, Detroit 535hp 6V92 diesels cruise at 15–16 knots. Detroit 720hp 8V92 engines cruise at 18–20 knots. The popular Hatteras 52 Cockpit MY is the same boat with a cockpit.
