The Hatteras 48 Cockpit Motor Yacht (not to be confused the newer Hatteras 48 Cockpit Motor Yacht produced in the 1990s) combines the practicality of a traditional aft-cabin motoryacht with the utility that only a cockpit can offer. Introduced in an era of high fuel prices, she was built on what Hatteras called a “dual mode” hull with rounded bilges forward, flat aftersections, and a long keel for directional stability. (The idea was to offer both low- and high-speed fuel efficiency.) The standard layout included a centerline double berth in the master cabin (twin single berths were optional), comfortable salon with an optional lower helm, and over/under bunks in the forward stateroom. An optional three-stateroom floorplan traded out the dinette for a third stateroom while leaving the galley down. Either way, the aft stateroom dimensions are impressive. Teak woodwork was used throughout the interior, and the only stall shower is aft. The semi-enclosed aft deck of the Hatteras 48 is huge for a boat this size with plenty of space for socializing. The cockpit is useful for line handling and boarding. No racehorse, Detroit 285hp 671N diesels cruise at 12–13 knots. Optional 425hp 6V92TA diesels cruise at 15–16 knots.

Overview

Well-built 1980s motoryacht combined upscale accommodations with traditional Hatteras luxury, time-tested owner satisfaction.

Features

Performance

Standard 285hp GM diesels cruise at 8 knots (10–11 knots top); optional 425hp GMs cruise at 15 knots (18–19 knots top).

The Hatteras 48 Cockpit MY was a top-tier cruising yacht in her day with modern lines, luxury-class accommodations, and the versatility that comes when a cockpit is added to a motoryacht layout. Even today, the Hatteras 48 is a good boat for the cruising couple, liveaboards, and those wanting to entertain in style without breaking the bank. A wide 16-foot beam permits an expansive interior with light oak woodwork, two double staterooms, comfortable salon, and spacious aft deck able to accommodate a small crowd. The standard layout has walkaround queen beds in both staterooms, two heads with separate stall showers, and a spacious salon with U-shaped sofa, coffee table, and built-in entertainment center. Forward, the mid-level galley and dinette are bright and airy thanks to large front windows directly overhead. Note the washer/dryer location in the forward companionway. An optional three-stateroom layout moved the dinette up into the salon while adding the third cabin opposite the galley. The semi-enclosed and covered aft deck has a wet bar and wing doors, and the small cockpit is useful for line handling and boarding. Detroit 535hp 6V92 diesels cruise at 16–18 knots.
