An updated version of the original Hatteras 46 Convertible (1974–81), the “Series II” version of this classic sportfishing yacht is nearly identical in appearance to her predecessor but a much-improved boat in several respects. Instead of the solid fiberglass hull of the original 46, the Series II version rides on a beefed-up hull with balsa coring in the hullsides and extra transverse frames in the bottom. (The keel was also shortened to improve handling and reduce wetted surface.) In other upgrades, a sliding door replaced the original hinged salon door, and fuel capacity was increased to 710 gallons. The interior layouts were also revised in the Series II. The standard two-stateroom floorplan features a lower galley arrangement that’s open to the salon, while the deckhouse galley configuration provides an expansive salon-galley area plus a third stateroom. Either layout offers a forward master stateroom and port guest stateroom with upper/lower berths. A tackle center with sink, in-deck fish box, and transom door were standard in the cockpit. Note the air intakes under the coaming. Detroit 650hp high-performance 8V92 diesels cruise the Hatteras 46 in the mid 20s (26–28 knots top).

The best-selling midsize convertible of her day, the Hatteras 46 went head-to-head against the Bertram 46 Convertible for popularity during the late 1970s and early ’80s. With her roomy teak interior and impressive offshore performance, the Hatteras 46 set the standards for every other boat in her class. Built on a solid fiberglass hull with a full-length keel, several interior plans were offered over the years. The original galley-down layout features an amidships master stateroom with twin berths and a large private head. Over/under berths are located in the forward guest stateroom with private access to the second head. An optional galley-up interior includes two staterooms with additional sleeping accommodations off the companionway. Many were sold with an optional lower helm. Aside from being an excellent sportfishing boat with good open-water handling characteristics, the traditional teak interior of the Hatteras 46 made her a popular choice with cruisers. A tackle center with sink, livewell, and transom door were standard in the 125 square-foot cockpit. Cockpit controls were a popular option. Detroit 425hp 8V71 diesels cruise the Hatteras 46 at 19–20 knots (low 20s top)

Last in a series of Hatteras 46 Convertibles going back to the mid-1970s, the sleek lines of the Hatteras 46 embodied the fresh styling common to all Hatteras convertibles in the 1990s. In terms of popularity, this version of the Hatteras 46 Convertible failed to achieve the sales success of her predecessors. Heavily built on a modified-V hull with cored hullsides and a shallow keel, two interior plans were available. The dual head layout provides for exceptional privacy, and the single head configuration offers a booth-style dinette. Both include a spacious, well-appointed salon with L-shaped settee to port and a large galley open to the salon. The master stateroom with tapered queen berth is forward while over/under berths are found in the guest stateroom. Interior cabinets and trim are light ash, and a salon entertainment center and washer/dryer were standard. The 121 square-foot cockpit—one of the largest in her class—includes bait and tackle centers, in-deck fish box, transom door, and direct access to the engine room. No lightweight, twin 735hp 8V92 Detroit diesels cruise at 24–25 knots (high 20s top). Optional MAN 780hp diesels cruise at 26–28 knots.
