The Hatteras 36 Convertible embodied the classic styling and quality construction of all Hatteras convertibles built in the 1980s. Unlike her sisterships, however, the 36 was built on a hull designed by Jim Wynne, not Jack Hargrave. The difference is the prop pockets of a Wynne hull, a feature that reduced the shaft angles for increased efficiency. Unfortunately, while the 36 Convertible is a capable offshore boat with good seakeeping attributes, she was nowhere near the top of her class in performance. That said, the 36 made an excellent family cruiser thanks to her deluxe (by 1980’s standards) interior accommodations. Buyers could pick between a single-stateroom floorplan with the galley down, and a two-stateroom layout with the galley up. A relatively small cockpit is another reason the Hatteras 36 never struck up a solid relationship with the hardcore tournament crowd. Standard 350hp gas engines cruise at 12–14 knots, and optional 390hp GM 6-71 diesels cruise around 20 knots (22–23 knots wide open). Note that the Hatteras 36 Sedan Cruiser (1986–87) is the same boat with an enlarged interior and an even smaller cockpit.
