The Egg Harbor 42 Convertible combines the graceful lines, comfortable accommodations, and spirited performance common to all Egg Harbor boats in the 1990s. She was built on the same modified-V hull used for her sistership, the Egg Harbor 38 Convertible (1990–94), with cored hullsides, a well-flared bow, and a relatively flat 8 degrees of transom deadrise. The two-stateroom, mid-galley floorplans offered in the Egg Harbor 42—and there were several—all featured an abundance of varnished teak woodwork, quality appliances, and plush (at least by 1990s standards) decorator fabrics. With just over 100 square feet of space, the cockpit can easily handle a fighting chair, and came standard with a molded tackle center, in-deck fish box, livewell, and transom door. Note that the exterior teak trim and covering boards were eliminated in 1995. Topside, the tournament flybridge is arranged with the helm well aft for a good view of the cockpit. Among several engine options, early models with 375hp Cats cruise in the low 20s (about 25 top). Twin 485hp 6-71 Detroits cruise at 25 knots (29 knots top), and optional 550hp 6V92s will run about a knot faster.

Introduced in 1995, the Egg Harbor 42 Convertible is a completely restyled version of the previous Egg Harbor 42 (1990–94)—a state-of-the art boat by the standards of her day, with as much (or more) eye appeal than anything in her class. The 42 was built on low-deadrise hull with a sharp bow entry, a solid fiberglass bottom, and a wide 15-foot beam. Her big 100-square-foot cockpit rivals many larger boats in both size and amenities. Below deck, the two-stateroom, single-head interior of the Egg 42 was offered with or without a dinette. A wet bar is standard in the salon where large windows offer panoramic views of the water. One step down, to port, is a U-shaped galley with serving counter (and two bar stools), refrigerator/freezer, microwave, and Corian counters. Additional features include a bow pulpit, central vacuum system, teak interior joinery, salon entertainment center, below-deck livewell, tackle drawers, cockpit bait freezer, insulated in-deck fish/storage box (macerated), transom door, fresh/raw-water washdowns, cockpit bolsters, teak covering boards, and cockpit access to the engine room. GM 485hp 6-71 diesels cruise at 18 knots (mid 20s top).
