The Eastern 31 Casco Bay is a descendant of the original JC 31, a commercial-style Downeast workboat popular along the New England coast. Designed by naval architect Royal Lowell, the Casco Bay rides on a semi-displacement hull with a graceful sheer, hard chines, and a long prop-protecting keel. According to the manufacturer, over 400 of these 31-foot hulls have been built going back to the days of the JC 31. Many are in charter operation, but more are used for recreational fishing and family cruising. Available with or without a flybridge, cabin accommodations include a forward V-berth, enclosed head with shower, teak and holly sole, and a hanging locker. The pilothouse offers comfortable helm and companion seats, a settee/dinette that converts to a double bunk, and a galley with two-burner stove, countertop, sink, and refrigerator. The windshield section opens for ventilation. The roomy cockpit is large enough for entertaining, diving or fishing activities. Options include heating/air conditioning, a 3.5 kW genset, a molded transom platform, and a transom door. Among several engine options over the years, a single 370hp Cummins will cruise the Eastern 31 at 18–20 knots (mid/high 20s top).
