An enlarged version of the Hans Christian Independence 45, the limited-production Independence 50 retains the same sturdy profile as her predecessor with the advantages of a larger main salon and additional cockpit space. Like her sistership, the Independence 50 was built on a semi-displacement hull with moderate beam, hard aft chines to reduce roll (rather than rounded bilges common to displacement designs), and a long, prop-protecting keel. Because she’s a custom yacht, several floorplan arrangements were possible including both two- and three-stateroom layouts. The galley is forward in the spacious full-width salon and visibility from the raised pilothouse is excellent. There’s room on the large aft deck atop the salon for dinghy storage and/or entertaining. Additional features include reverse-angle pilothouse windows, bow thruster, raised bulwarks, varnished teak interior joinery, a well-arranged engine room and commercial-grade cabin windows. (A flybridge was optional.) The Independence 50 was offered with a single engine for economical long range cruising, or with twin engines for top speeds in the 17–18 knot range.
