Introduced in 2003 as the 270 Signature (and called the 280 Signature in 2006–09), this stylish pocket cruiser made good on Chaparral’s claim of quality construction and roomy accommodations. Unlike most other 27-footers with trailerable 8-foot, 6-inch beams, the 270/280’s wide 9-foot, 6-inch beam ensures a more livable interior as well as a larger cockpit. A handsome boat on the outside, the interior of the Signature 270 sleeps six: two in the forward V-berth, two in the aft cabin, and two more when the dinette is converted. The galley is a little light on storage and counter space; the head, on the other hand, is surprisingly roomy. Privacy curtains separate the sleeping areas from the main cabin, and the upscale decor is a blend of cherry joinery, designer fabrics, and vinyl wall coverings. In the cockpit, the helm has a tilt wheel and dual flip-up seating. Lacking side decks, a walk-through windshield provides access to the foredeck. Additional features include a transom storage locker, cockpit entertainment center, radar arch, and a well-designed engine room with a push-button lift. Among several engine options, twin 225hp Volvo I/Os will top out at close to 40 knots.
